The challenges of translating design into a responsive website build

Hi Reader,

Last episode was all about how the work is never over after launch—it’s only just beginning. In our case, it took us just 10 episodes to realize we wanted to head in a new direction.

We were over the bright orange overload in the background of our video episodes. We were tired of the dotted patterns dominating our branding. And as for our intro… let’s just say, if most of our YouTube viewers were dropping off before the episode even started, we knew it was time for some updates.

That’s why, with Episode 11, we’re rolling out a new color scheme, a restructured intro sequence, an updated album cover, and other branding updates that we’re excited about!

As for this week’s episode, we’re tackling a challenge that every designer and developer has faced: why do web designs that look great in Figma often break when they go live?

We’ve all been there—you design something that looks perfect on one screen, only to realize it falls apart across different devices. Text overflows, layouts collapse, and images don’t scale properly. So what’s going wrong?

In this episode, Virgil, Cole, and Chad break down:

  • Why designing for one screen size leads to major problems
  • The most common mistakes that break layouts, text, and images
  • What developers wish designers understood about responsive design
  • Lessons we learned (the hard way) while redesigning High Monkey’s website

If you've ever struggled with making a design actually work across all screen sizes, this episode is for you.

Episode 12: Finding the metadata Goldilocks zone

When it comes to metadata, too much is just as bad as too little. Over-tagging clutters your system, under-tagging makes content impossible to find—but finding just the right balance? That’s the real challenge.

In next week's episode, we break down how to create a metadata strategy that actually works and why tagging everything is the same as tagging nothing. Stay tuned!
